Neurogenesis persists in the brains of some mammals throughout adult life. For a long time, it was thought that these new neurons were added only temporarily and were replaced after a few months. A recent study conducted by Jean-Claude Platel in Harold Cremer’s team published in eLife showed that these newly generated neurons add up permanently in the olfactory bulb neural network leading to an increase in the neuronal population and the size of the olfactory bulb. These new results change our understanding of adult neurogenesis and should finally clarify its role in the brain.
